Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, is an elective cosmetic surgical procedure using breast implants. In addition to enlarging the breast size, breast augmentation can correct slightly sagging breasts or breasts that have lost volume due to pregnancy or weight loss.
There are three different types of incisions. Selection is based on individual anatomy, your desired outcome, and the size and shape of your implants:
- Inframmary incision (an incision made under the breast)
- Transaxillary incision (an incision made in the underarm area)
- Periareolar incision (an incision made around the areola [the darker skin surrounding the nipple])
The implants will be placed beneath the chest wall muscle or directly behind breast tissue; they will either be pre-filled or filled during surgery to create the desired volume. Incisions are closed with absorbable sutures. Over time the incision lines will fade.
